01.05.2008: Chelsea through to their first Champions League final

Chelsea go through to the final of the Champions League in Moscow with a 3-2 (4-3 aggregate) win over Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.

Didier Drogba scored twice and Frank Lampard netted from the penalty spot in a surprisingly open game that had everybody on the edge of their seats until the very end of extra time.

Lampard was outstanding in midfield after an emotional week that saw the death of his mother from pneumonia.

Fernando Torres had first leveled the score before Lampard's penalty put the blues ahead again and when Nicholas Anelka ghosted past Jon Riise to feed a world class pass into the path of Drogba who powered his way in front of two Liverpool defenders to slot the ball past Pepe Rena.

Ryan Babel thundered a 35 yard shot past Petr Cech with only 3 minutes left of extra time to silence the faithful Chelsea crowd, but it was too late and Chelsea held on to book their place in the final against Manchester United on the 21st May in Moscow.

21.04.2008: Woman driver makes racing history

Danica Patrick became the first female winner in IndyCar history after claiming the Indy Japan 300 race at the Twin Ring Motegi racetrack on Sunday.

The 26-year-old, in her 50th IndyCar race, finished 5.85 seconds ahead of Helio Castroneves in Japan.

"It's been a long time coming - this is fabulous," said Patrick.

Danica made her name in American motorsport by finishing fourth in the Indy500 in 2005, and came seventh in the overall standings last season.

"It was a fuel strategy race, but my team called it perfectly for me," added Patrick, who drives for the Andretti Green Racing team.

"I knew I was on the same strategy as Helio and when I passed him for the lead, I couldn't believe it.

"I knew there was a good reason for coming to Japan. I want to thank my team, the fans and everyone who has supported me.

"I've been asked so many times when and if I could win my first race and finally, no more of those questions."

Patrick took the lead from Castroneves on the 198th lap of the 200-lap race after starting in the third row.

"I think Danica is such a fantastic person and I'm thrilled for her that the monkey is finally off of her back," said Michael Andretti, co-owner of Andretti Green Racing.

"We have all believed in her and she proved today that she is a winner. Frankly, I think this is the first of many."

21.04.2008: Eriksson not worried by exit reports

Sven-Goran Eriksson is confident he will still be Manchester City manager next season despite reports he could be replaced in the summer.

Eriksson told BBC Radio 5 Live he would meet owner Thaksin Shinawatra, who has promised a review of structures and personnel at the club, next weekend.

"I am not worried at all, absolutely not," he said after Sunday's 3-1 victory over Portsmouth at Eastlands.

"I believe I will be sitting in this chair next season."

Shinawatra brought in former England boss Eriksson when he took control of the club last summer.

City made an encouraging start to the Premier League season, winning their first three games, including a victory over neighbours Manchester United, and their first nine league matches at Eastlands.

But they have slipped to eighth with an indifferent record since the turn of the year, Sunday's win only their second at home since December.

"I can understand people not being happy with the second half of the season," added Eriksson. "My opinion, over the whole season, is that we have done very well.

"I don't think, from a young and new team, many of whom have not played in the Premier League before, that you can expect to play brilliantly all the time.

"I don't think you can compete with the four big clubs. If you are among eight, nine, 10, it is a good result; if you can reach Europe, it is brilliant.

"We still have a chance and as long as that exists we will carry on going for it."

City are six points behind fifth-placed Everton with three games left.

City's form has not been helped by a glut of late-season injuries, and skipper Richard Dunne was added to the list on Sunday after he limped off with a hamstring injury.

06.04.2008: Comply Or Die wins the UK Grand National

Winning jockey Timmy Murphy said his Grand National victory on board Comply Or Die was the best result of his 15-year professional career.

The 33-year-old's win in the sport's most famous race caps a superb comeback in what has been a turbulent career.

"This would be the highlight of anyone's career," said Murphy, who has battled alcoholism and been to prison.

"You only have to think of the people who have not even got round, never mind those who have won."

Murphy gave his mount a masterful ride, waiting until the final fence to make the decisive move.

"My main worry was the first fence as he can jump big, but he has been much better with the blinkers on," said Murphy, who also rode Our Vic to victory over Kauto Star in the Totesport Bowl earlier in the week at Aintree.

He did come up a bit at the first but he settled down after that. The plan was to ride him handy, get him into a rhythm and settle him. I hung on for as long as possible as I didn't want to get there too soon.

He came out of my hands at the last and when I got to the Elbow I thought I would let him go.

"I could feel Paul Carberry (jockey on second-placed King Johns Castle) behind me but when I got to the Elbow my fellow picked up again and went away."

Murphy took over from Tony McCoy as owner David Johnson's number one jockey - in association with the Pipe stable in 2004 - and the move has ultimately proved a huge success for all concerned.

His Grand National win is the crowning achievement in a life and career that have seen more than their fair share of ups and downs.

Murphy served three months in prison in 2002 for an indecent assault on an airline hostess while under the influence of alcohol, and he also spent five weeks in the Priory Clinic battling alcoholism.

And despite wins in the Irish Grand National and the Hennessey Gold Cup, Murphy's life in the saddle has also suffered several setbacks.

He was sacked from Kim Bailey's yard for persistently bad time-keeping and lost his job as Paul Nicholls's stable jockey twice, while two drink-driving convictions did little to improve his image.

But his talent has never been in doubt, and his Grand National triumph confirms his place among the elite jockeys plying their trade on the National Hunt circuit.

"He is a very good jockey and on his day he is up there with the best of them," Comply or Die's trainer David Pipe, who won the race in just his second season as a trainer, told BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek.

"He is a real horseman, and you couldn't ask for anyone better on your horse in the Grand National.

"He has done amazingly well to come back and all credit to him. It has been a hard road, and he probably never dreamed this was going to be at the end of it for him."

Murphy will not be resting on his laurels, however. He was due to travel to Southwell for two rides on Sunday.

But Pipe confirmed that Comply or Die will not run again this season.

"He will have a nice long holiday, out to grass, before he comes back in next season," he added. "Obviously the long-term objective is the Grand National again."

06.04.2008: Serena Williams beats Jankovic to fifth Miami win

Defending champion Serena Williams overcame an attack of nerves to see off Serbia's Jelena Jankovic and win the Sony Ericsson Open for the fifth time.

The American, 26, beat the fourth seed 6-1 5-7 6-3 in two hours 25 minutes.

Williams was in total control early on, winning eight straight games, but was broken to love serving for the match.

Jankovic, 23, took advantage to level thanks to a Williams double-fault, but the American eventually came through with three breaks in the decider.

15.02.2008: Valentino Rossi hands over 19m euros

Former motorcycling world champion Valentino Rossi has reached agreement to hand over 19m euros (£14m) in unpaid taxes to the Italian authorities. The payment covers the tax years 2001 to 2004, and could rise to as much as 35m euros when the MotoGP star's earnings for 2005-06 are considered.

The authorities began investigating Rossi amid tax evasion allegations linked to his move to London in 2000.

The seven-times world champion said he was glad to have reached a deal.

"I'm very happy with the way this difficult affair has turned out because I think I will be calmer now and that will help me to concentrate on my work," he said in a statement.

"For several reasons, I've already decided to return to live in Italy.

"London is a very interesting city but spending more time with my family and friends has become a necessity for me given that due to my commitments on the [MotoGP] tour I spend more than half the year away from home.

"I could not return if I had problems with the Italian tax authorities. I could not allow this to drag on either.

"I've come to an agreement with the tax agency which will allow me to return calm and ready ahead of the new season."

15.02.2008: Klitschko faces the toughest challenge of his career

IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko faces the toughest challenge of his career against Sultan Ibragimov, according to trainer Emanuel Steward. The fight at New York's Madison Square Garden on 23 February will unify two of the four heavyweight world titles.

Russia's Ibragimov, 32 became WBO champion after defeating Evander Holyfield in Moscow in October 2007.

"He will be the best fighter that Wlad will have fought in his career," said Steward, who is training Klitschko.

Despite his physiological edge over his opponent - Klitschko is four inches taller and over a stone heavier - the Ukrainian acknowledged his advantage will not have a significant effect in the ring.

"This guy is very intelligent, a smart fighter. He is a champion," said Klitschko.

"He is holding a title and he is undefeated and won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympics. He is not impressive, but is a very effective fighter."

Steward - who prepared Lennox Lewis in the previous world heavyweight unification fight against Evander Holyfield in 1999 - revealed the 31-year-old Klitschko has raised his intensity in training.

"We are training six hours a day. We're not taking him lightly," he said.

"He knows how to win fights. He has pretty good hand speed, makes a big guy miss a punch.

"And he's left-handed and puts himself in a position that makes him hard to hit. He's fought big guys all of his life."

But despite praising Ibragimov's attributes, Steward lamented the lack of quality opponents for Klitschko.

"It does frustrate me," said Steward. "I feel like I'm working with one of the best heavyweights in history.

"I think he's at his peak but he doesn't have anyone to fight.

"Wlad is just unfortunate that there are no names out there. The only way to gain recognition is to try and be the unified champion."

11.02.2008: Manchester United beaten at home in the local derby

Manchester United were beaten by derby rivals Manchester City to put a serious dent into United's title hopes.

A minute's silence and tribute to the Munich air disaster victims took place before a game which saw Darius Vassell's strike put City ahead and then extend their lead with a glanced Benjani Mwaruwari header, which appeared to come off the striker's shoulder.

United struggled to make any impact going forward and looked far short of being title contenders with a well below par performance.

Michael Carrick worked space on the edge of the area with only 1 minute of the game remaining to curl a side foot shot in off the post, but it came too late with City holding on to win by two goals to one.

05.02.2008: Capello makes Steven Gerrard his captain

England manager Fabio Capello has made Steven Gerrard his captain for Wednesday's friendly against Switzerland, his first match in charge.

The Liverpool midfielder steps into the role until Capello has had more time to decide on a permanent skipper, with previous incumbent John Terry injured.

Capello said: "Gerrard is important because he can pass on things, transmit things and inspire the players.

"But I will not name a permanent captain before the Andorra match."

Andorra are England's first opponents in their World Cup 2010 qualifying campaign on 6 September.

Capello, speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, revealed that he told his players of the decision before announcing it to the media.

And he added that he plans to inform the players of his team selection for Wednesday at the hotel before they leave for the match.

04.02.2008: New York Giants Win Superbowl

New York Giants produce an amazing final 80 yard drive in the final 4 minutes to win this years superbowl.

After a tight and tense first 3 quarters, New England edged ahead with a touchdown with only 4 minutes to go. On the kick off return, the New York Giants were restricted to only a short 14 yard return, meaning Eli Manning had to drive New York the full length of the field to pull of a spectacular win.

Manning held his nerve and after a couple of scary moments where he was almost sacked twice before launching a great pass to gain over 40 yards, Manning made the final pass look simple with a simple lob into the end zone to take the lead with only 20 second left to play.

New England couldn't get anything going with the remaining seconds and when Tom Brady was sacked back on his own 20 yard line, the game was all over with the New York defense crowding out a final hail mary.
